When you’re looking for information on the specific planes an airline uses or which seats are best on each aircraft, it’s often difficult, or at least time-consuming, to find it. With that in mind, we’ve prepared this guide to the planes Lufthansa (LH) flies on its US routes, including flight numbers by aircraft type and best / worst seats in economy class.

Lufthansa Economy Planes and Seats Ranked by Comfort and Amenities

If you’re going to be on a flight for more than a few hours, you’re going to want a comfortable seat. This guide ranks Lufthansa’s best planes and seats for economy class flights based primarily on seat comfort. We also discuss the best seats on each plane as well as seats you should avoid.

1. Airbus A340-600 (A346)

The 213 economy seats on Lufthansa’s A340-600 are 17.3″ wide with a 31″ pitch. Most rows are arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration. Lufthansa’s A340-600 economy seats are equipped with both AC and USB power.

Row 28 has the most legroom in economy class, even more than the premium economy seats – if you can get this row, don’t bother with the upgrade as there are some problems with certain PE seats on this plane.

2. Boeing 747-400 (B744)

Lufthansa’s 747-400 has 308 standard economy seats with 17.1″ seat width, 31″ pitch, and AC / USB power outlets. The seats are arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration except for rows 54-58, which are 2-4-2 and 0-4-0.

For passengers traveling with infants, the only true bulkhead for a bassinet is row 43.

Best seats: Row 29 – extra legroom but narrower seats due to armrest storage; 29C and 29H -protrude into aisle, other passengers may bump into you); 32B, 32J, 33A, 33K (legroom);
Seats to avoid: Row 31 (limited recline, proximity to lavatory); 32C and 32H, 33C-H (proximity to lavatory); Row 42 (limited recline, galley proximity); Row 43 (bulkhead, seat dividers/storage); 53A, 53K (limited legroom); Row 58 (cramped, proximity to gallery, limited recline)
Rows without middle seats: 54B-C and H-J, 55B-C and H-J, 56B-C and H-J
Seats of note: 54B, 54J, 55B, 55J have extra space between seat and wall. This may appeal to some passengers but others may not like it because you can’t lean against the wall to rest or sleep.

3. Boeing 747-8 (B748)

Lufthansa’s Boeing 748 carries up to 244 standard economy passengers, with seats arranged primarily in a 3-4-3 configuration.

Best and Worst Seats

Rows 16-20 are located in an area of the plane that is more private, has limited foot traffic, and is near the front of the plane for faster exit upon arrival. However, row 16 is a bulkhead row. Baby carriers are attached here and legroom is limited, except for seats 16C and 16H, which have a curtain in front rather than a bulkhead wall. Rows 18 and 19 have limited legroom, and the seats in row 20 have limited recline.

Row 27 offer more legroom but the seats are narrower than other economy seats due to a divider housing the in-flight entertainment system and tray table. Seats 27C and 27H protrude into the aisle, making it likely that other passengers will bump into you when walking around the cabin.

Rows 28 and 45 have limited legroom.

Row 33 has limited recline.

Seats 30A, 41K, and 46H have limited foot and leg room.

Row 34 is an infant / bulkhead row. It has good legroom if you’re not too tall but does not have good foot support.

Seats 44A, 44K have good recline with no one behind you but are narrower than other seats.

Row 45, 46, and 47 have an extra space between the wall and the B and J seats. This can be handy for storing your personal item during the flight, but you can’t lean against the wall to sleep or rest.

Seats B-C and H-J in Rows 46 and 47 have good legroom unless the passenger in front of you reclines their seat. In Row 47, there is no one behind you in these seats. Passengers traveling in pairs and those who wish to avoid middle seats will appreciate the relative privacy of the B-C and H-J seats in these rows.

Seats 46B and 46J have very good legroom, especially if the passenger in front doesn’t recline or use space between their seat and the wall.

4. Airbus A340-300 (A343)

The A343 is Lufthansa’s fourth most comfortable plane for economy class flights, with a 17″ seat width and 31-32″ pitch. The 221 standard economy seats are equipped with both AC and USB power outlets and are arranged in either a 2-4-2 or 2-3-2 configuration.

Best seats: Row 16 – extra legroom but reduced seat width due to tray table in armrest; 46A, C, H, and K – you can recline these seats and there is no seat behind you, but they are close to the galley which may be loud at times
Seats to avoid: 18 D through 18G – reduced seat width; Row 27 – limited recline; 30H, 30C – limited legroom; 32A – limited legroom; 41D, 41G – flyers tend to be bumped into in these seats; 42D through 42G – reduced seat width
Rows without middle seats: Seats A-C and H-K in all rows

5. Airbus A330-300 (A333)

Fifth on the list in terms of economy class comfort is Lufthansa’s A333, with 17″ seat width, 31″ pitch, and both AC and USB power outlets. The A333 has 177 standard economy seats arranged in either a 2-4-2 or 2-3-2 configuration.

6. Airbus 350-900 (A359)

With 17″ seat width, 31″ pitch and only USB power outlets at most seats, the A359 is Lufthansa’s least comfortable plane for economy class. The A359 has 224 standard economy seats arranged mainly in a 3-3-3 configuration. Some passengers complain that they feel cramped and uncomfortable in this aircraft. For those traveling in pairs, rows 16 and 27 are arranged 2-3-2.

While it may not be tops in comfort, a distinguishing feature of the A359 is the fact that it uses 25% less fuel and emits 25% less greenhouse gases due to its lightweight construction.

Best seats: Row 16 – lack of true bulkhead translates to a lot of legroom plus this row is arranged 2-3-2 but seat width is reduced by tray table in armrest; 28A, 28K – no seat in front of you means additional legroom but seat width is reduced by tray table in armrest; 18C, 18H – more legroom but you may be bumped into by other passengers and crew
Seats to avoid: Row 29 – limited legroom; Row 41, Row 42 – limited recline, proximity to lavatories and galley
