live look outside at oracle park at the giant race that started just moments ago. you see people taking off to the races right here. we have crowds of people excited to get their day started running right there at the ballpark. thanks for joining us. i'm velena jones in for kira klapper today. cinthia pimentel has a look at your microclimate forecast. how's it looking cynthia? we see lots of sunshine there through orange park. but the fog is rolling around here and there through the golden gate bridge. definitely a different scene than what we started with yesterday. our cameras soaked in with that drizzle. we see clear skies for our sunday. it's a bit gloomy down here through the south bay, dealing with a little bit of that cloudy attitude. but look at that. our microclimates. lots of sunshine out there towards the tri valley. we're going to remain still through a below average temperatures this weekend. continuing that cool weekend for us here. 81 in santa rosa, 68 there in the city, 80 degrees out in livermore and 75 down here in downtown san jose.

as we go on and plan our sunday, we'll see more of that afternoon sunshine and feel the breezy winds through the afternoon and actually drive up those temperatures a little bit more as we get our workweek started here monday. and tuesday. it will be brief, because as we go through the rest of the workweek, i'm already tracking a bit of a cooldown kind of an interesting pattern, so i'll be back with that in about 15 minutes. velena. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, we have breaking news this morning. several people are displaced after a three alarm structure fire in the east bay. the fire started around 3 a.m. on west buchanan road at the woodland hills apartment building in pittsburgh. now, take a look at this. you can see flames ripped through the apartments. people inside said they smelled smoke and had to find a way out. it took a minute to come to and then i smelled the smoke. and then i saw the flames. we started kicking, banging on the doors, trying to wake everyone up. scary situation there. firefighters are still on scene this morning mopping up the area. no word on how the fire

started. and a major shakeup in the real estate industry. yesterday was the first day of new rules nationwide governing governing how realtors are getting paid and who pays them. the changes come after the national association of realtors settled a series of class action lawsuits alleging the groups compensation rules violated antitrust laws. today, in the bay's marianne favro reports from los altos on how the new rules impact bay area buyers and sellers. one of the first changes you may notice is at open houses, because now attendees will be required to sign in and indicate if they have an agent and who that person is. the new changes are aimed at increasing transparency. previously, when a home was sold, the seller typically paid a 5 or 6% commission that was divided between the agents for the buyer and the seller. now, a seller gets to decide whether to pay

7:04 am

the buyer's broker anything, and if so, how much. and sellers agents are no longer allowed to advertise commissions to buyers agents on multiple listing services. crystal wong recently purchased a home and believes this change offers buyers more transparency. i think it's a really positive change. you're going into it knowing as a buyer you're not being steered in one direction or another. you're being steered towards the properties that meet your criteria, not towards the properties or the sellers are going to pay your agent a higher fee or not. another change the buyer and their agents are going to have a formalized agreement, very much like the seller and the seller's agent. that agreement must spell out exactly what commission the buyer will pay their agent. real estate agent patrice horvath, founder of illuminate properties in los altos, says she does not anticipate the changes will have a big impact on the bay area

real estate market, where inventory is low and demand is high. i don't see it affecting pricing. i don't see it affecting the number of offers. i really don't see that affecting that part of the market. i just see confusion. as for real estate agents, they will now have to grapple with 30 additional forms. but because they'll have agreements with buyers, they know that if they spend years helping their client find a home, they will be compensated in the end. marianne favro today in the bay. vallejo police say two officers in a patrol car were shot at early yesterday morning. it happened during a routine patrol near harbor way and marine island way. the officers heard multiple gunshots and responded in the direction of the shots. they soon discovered that their patrol vehicle had been struck by at least one bullet. they called for help and chp officers, as well as multiple other agencies responded. the incident remains under

for joining us this morning. we know that democrats are gathering in chicago as the democratic national convention kicks off tomorrow. so how do you think vice president harris's new economic plan to cut taxes for more than 100 million middle class and low income americans play a part in her message to voters this week. hi, velena. great to be with you. well, i think it will be one of the centerpieces of the message that we hear. the fact that she's going to promise to make the country fairer, the tax code fairer. that's one of the platforms that she's running on. that's a part of her platform, i should say. but the question is, will we get more details? so far, we don't know a whole lot about how she would govern if she were, in fact, to be elected. in addition to taxes, she called for a ban on price gouging of groceries. that's actually a somewhat controversial proposal. so we'll be listening closely to see what

she has to say. on thursday, her big keynote address really, the biggest test of her entire political career. i'm told there will be a lot of biography involved in her speech, but how much meat will she actually put on the bones? will she continue the biden agenda? will she break from it? what does she have to say about what progressives are calling for, both globally and nationally? so there are a lot of question marks, and it also comes as chicago, as the nation is bracing for tens of thousands of protesters to descend upon the windy city. how will that impact what happens inside the convention hall? so a lot to track this week in chicago. velena all right. thanks for joining us. christian thank you. and if you missed meet the press this morning at 6 a.m, don't worry. you can watch the show online on any of our streaming platforms. coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the excitement growing for

three game. it's taking place in boston this afternoon. today in the bay's marcus washington spoke with some nba legends who say this matchup will be one of the best yet. good morning. basketball's big three championship is heating up. and this is the one. that's the three on three league that made a stop right here in the bay area earlier this year. over in oakland. now joining us this morning to talk about this weekend's big three championship. all star game. and of course nba legends that we have in the house with us this morning. we have of course oakland's own the son of oakland gary payton. we have clyde drexler as well as michael cooper joining us this morning. look, when you have this many legends in the house, i just don't know to how act right now. but thank you all for joining us this morning to talk about this. i mean, childhood dream, right here to talk to the three of you all at the same time. okay. so

7:45 am

let's talk about it right here. just last week we had ice cube, co-founder of the big three tournament, had him on the show. he said, this is the best season yet. after seven seasons. and here we are at the championship game. and i know this is a big thing. gary and michael, i know you both are coaches of the team. i got to start with you, gary. i know you have the number one seed team and of course you're a son of the bay area. i want to start off with you, you know, what are we expecting to see from this game? well, i think what we're going to do is we're going to see a competition, a great competition. i think we got as michael can, agree with me, i think we got two, two great basketball teams with five great guys on the on both squads. and we have a multiple of players that can compete. and i think that it's going to be a battle. i know mike is upset with me about how we beat him earlier in the year, but it was one game. it was one of them games where it was competitive. you know what i'm saying? it was competitive. it went right down

7:46 am

to the wire, it was a call that was made and we were so happy. one on a free throw. but i think it's going to be like that on sunday. i think we're going to compete. i think it's going to be a close game. and whoever doesn't make the most, you know, mistakes and get all the loose balls and all that, i think is going to win the basketball game and everybody's got to be smart. and michael, i think, look, the thing about it, you got to tell them, look, that's the past. we're talking about the future right here. what can fans expect to see here with this game. because the thing about it is it is gaining so much momentum and it's just a big time right now for basketball. but sure. and i think, you know what, as a former player and all of us know, this is the one thing that we miss the most. you don't necessarily miss the running up and down, but you miss the camaraderie and the competitive spirit. and i think that's what we're able to get. being here in the big three. i know our team is going to play well, you know, gary's been the top team bivouac. he's taken a team that never made the playoffs in the playoffs, not only in the playoffs, but playing for a

7:47 am

championship. and that's the type of player that he is. and that's the one thing that i like about this situation that we're in now. finding three's company playing against bivouac is that old championship competitive spirit, and i know gary's going to have a lot to say to his team. i got a lot to say to ours, yeah, we lost that one game. sometimes you can learn from the losses, and that's what we're going to try to do this weekend. nobody can touch the big three. let's make that clear. so these teams. gary's team, bivouac cougs teams, three's company they're fighting for the world championship of three on three basketball, which is a big deal. and we're all excited to be here. we've been doing this seven years and it has been phenomenal. look, we're running out of time. but i just want to say thank you all for joining us. and also coop congratulations i'm talking to two hall of famers. but two months from now it'll be three. so congratulations to you on that. and thank you all for joining us here in the bay area. thank you very much. the 49ers return to levi's stadium tonight for their first and only preseason home game at home. it will be the niners first game at

the santa clara venue since winning the nfc championship game last season. the team will bring back jamie coffee and queen irvine, the nfl's first female in-stadium p.a. announcers, and yarissa nicole, who is a black saxophonist, will play sunday's national anthem, while the native american woman warriors will be behind her in the color guard. the team's theme again this year is football for all. it's a nod to the diversity of the bay area. we really want folks to come to the game and see themselves represented. if you can see it, you can be. it is what we hear all the time and that's what we really want to convey. it's an important tenant for the 49ers organization that we represent, the bay area and the diverse audience and fan base that we have for the faithful. an important message there. the first regular season game takes place on september 9th, which is a monday night at levi's against the jets and former new york

congressman, congressman george santos is expected to plead guilty monday to multiple counts in his federal fraud indictment. a hearing for the plea is set for 3 p.m. on monday. nbc reached out to santos's lawyer for comment, but have not heard back. the former republican congressman previously pleaded not guilty on a range of financial crimes, including collecting unemployment benefits while working and using campaign contributions to pay for personal items like designer clothing. these criminal charges are all coming after santos was expelled from the house of representatives in december of last year. tomorrow, the four day democratic national convention begins. the event will end thursday, when vice president kamala harris and minnesota governor tim walz will be officially installed as the party's presidential and vice presidential nominees. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us, where a month into this, harris candidacy.

7:50 am

now, what are you seeing, larry? what a rollout. first of all, what a rollout, a perfect rollout if the republicans say it's a perfect rollout. i mean, it's just been amazing, flawless thus far. so what happens out of this? well, a lot of enthusiasm. for one thing, they're looking at this. the delegates are 4000 plus. they say, wow, we've got a good thing going. and the result of that is they're very, very inspired. you wouldn't have thought of that a month ago. they were expecting a funeral. now they've got a celebration. and so this is going to be a convention for these folks that they never thought they'd see a lot of this, by the way, velena is all wrapped up in a recent poll that we saw first in june, then in august, the poll asked the question simply how inspired are you are about what you see in your candidates, and you see with the republicans, they were about the same 7171. nothing has changed from june to august. but you look at the democrats and they have surged. they've surged from the low 40s to 85%. enthusiasm is the key.

7:51 am

enthusiasm is the key to any party putting their candidates g re people vote. so right now democrats are feeling good, but we caution right now. right now. right. there's a long road until november. now, how might this differ from the republican national convention? because we know, obviously this is coming after that. yeah first of all, president biden, who expected of course, a month ago to speak in thursday, is speaking monday. it's the handoff he's passing the torch, if you will. he's got to be very delicate here in terms of making sure that he talks about what he's done, but also promoting his vice president to the top job. that's going to be tough. and that's what he's got to do. another difference here is that we look at the republican convention. you might have remembered that trump, the big word behind him and every other speaker. it was homage to trump. it was all about trump. i think the democrats are going to look about issues, looking forward, handling, handling the various issues, the economy, the border,

7:52 am

a woman's right to choose things like these. you're going to see them pounce on trump trying to show the differences. and i think that's something you really want to watch as this four day event evolves. sure. so we talked about it at the beginning. that excitement, you know, now that vice president kamala harris is at the top of the ticket, we have obviously seen a shift. do you think that she'll be able to sustain that though, larry? you know, she caught a break. she caught a big break by not having to go through primaries and so she didn't have to avoid any tough questions. now she's going to have to face some interviews. she can't put it off any longer. interviews with the press. press conferences where they're going to throw out all kinds of questions to her. and that becomes very, very important to see how she responds to them. will she have the kind of problems she had in 2020, or will she be much more poised this time and responsive? i think we also need to think about things such as september 10th. that's the big debate date. that's what everybody is looking. that's when you're really going to see the contrast. we know all about trump. we know who he is and who

7:53 am

he isn't. but still, harris is something of an enigma to a lot of people. so how will she manage in that debate. so you put that together and you're also going to expect a lot of republican attacks on her between now and november. why? because she's the front one now, and all the guns are going to be organized republican guns. it is against her. so lots to look at. we've got 79 days. and let me tell you, on the one hand, they're going to fly by. on the other hand, every day will be a challenge, right? every day counts. right? yep. all right. thanks so much, larry. coming up next, a quick look at the top stories, including breaking news in the east bay. we're tracking an overnight apartment fire that displaced several people. the scary moments for resid
