How accurate are weather radars? ›

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

The pulse Doppler weather radars employed by the National Weather Service, which are known as Nexrad, make quantitative measurements of precipitation, warn of potential flooding or dangerous hail, provide wind speed and direction, indicate the presence of wind shear and gust fronts, track storms, predict thunderstorms, ...

Red is typically a target moving away from the radar, while green is applied to targets moving toward the radar. The intensity of these colors determines its estimated speed.

These droplets might be too small for the radar to detect effectively. Since low-level moisture can lead to the formation of such fine droplets, the rain might be falling right under our noses but stay invisible to the radar.

The drawback of Doppler radar is that it can be affected by atmospheric conditions such as precipitation, temperature inversions and wind. This can cause the radar signals to scatter or reflect in unexpected ways, making it difficult to accurately track the objects in question.

Why are the existing Doppler radars not sufficient for predicting tornadoes? The radar isn't able to see the whole atmosphere. There would need to be many more radar stations, especially in the lower atmosphere.

So, if you see a radar map using this scale, black would indicate “no echo” which basically means the radar did not get any measurement for the black areas of the map. Purple, on the other hand indicates intense echos were received by the radar and most likely very intense rain with large hail possible.
