XB7 Fast Blinks White/Purple 5 Times And That's It

I'm in Monroe Michigan. Came home from work at Midnight and no internet. Walked over to the XB7 and no lights, no activity. I unplug the AC for 10 seconds and as soon as I plug it back in, it blinks white/purple 5 times really fast - like a timed strobe - and that's it. No other activity. I think this little bastard just upped and died either from the heat or the thunderstorm brief thunderstorm that hit around 11:45 PM, because every single time I unplug the AC and plug it back in, the XB7 does that white/purple strobe 5 times and that's it. Flatline dead.

Gonna buy my own hardware in the morning.

Anyone else see an XB7 do this out of the blue?

Why not just get it replaced for free…

Really?!? They're gonna climb out of bed in their PJs and head on over, or are the going make wait 5 to 10 days for tech to turn up, and make me lose money calling off work?!?

No. Go here and they will give you a new XB7 or XB8, no questions asked. »maps.app.goo.gl/Q3jp7AhX ··· nxTfs8H9

Nope, don't have a fast walking stick for that. Why would I travel that far when Staples and Walmart are a 3 mile bus ride away?!? And even then, if an XB8 dies on me, I'm back to square one without my own equipment. I have no choice but to buy and activate my own hardware to get up and running and lose money calling off for a tech visit.

Because if the gear you buy conks out in the same manner as the XB7, you will be back in this same exact situation and you will be out however much it costs to buy your own equipment. If you can't make the trip and don't have backup internet access to get you through the weekend, well, I guess you played yourself.

Make sure you buy the right modem or you won’t get Next Gen upload speeds when available. Very few retail modems support them. The XB7 does.

The modem just died.. it happens. Likely tried to do a firmware update it it bricked for some reason, It's rare but happens.

Take an Uber to the closest Comcast store and swap it. It'll be far cheaper than buying your own... even with the uber ride most likely.

Re: XB7 Fast Blinks White/Purple 5 Times And That's It

I just ordered a CODA56 that'll be overnighted so I don't miss work. Mandatory overtime - 60 hours. A call off would make my Saturday straight time instead of overtime, and Sunday's double time can't make up for it. Just can't afford to lose up to $300 over this. I'll see if I can ship the dead XB7 to Eureka road and they can ship a replacement. That way my CODA56 is the fallback gear ...

Do you have a separate router to use with that? The CODA56 is a modem-only device, not a Wi-Fi gateway like the XB7.

This attitude is why I wish politicians would force internet providers to open and staff local offices in their areas of coverage instead of concentrating then in big cities. Do the elderly "play themselves" when they're unable to travel?!? Go play with yourself - it guarantees you can't procreate. Ensures humanity that the gene pool stops with you.

Even the small city i'm from has a store I can swap gear with... but they will put stores where the main customers are.

Thing is though, these things just happen and if you truly need a 24/7 connection you need to have a backup connection with a router that supports fall over, or at least a spare modem around.

Electronics die, but when it's covered by the ISP.. you just call and they basically overnight a new one, and you drop the old one at UPS.

Is there not even a friend you can send to the Comcast store to swap the modem? Throw them $10 or $20 to do the errand, and just call CS to add them to the account to do the swap. I have swapped modems for friends/family on several occasions when they were too busy to go or they were not technically inclined.

as said above, make sure you have a router to use as well as you'll need one.

I got routers up the wazoo. Can't seem to offload them. Hooked up an ax3000 to see if my computer's LAN port still worked. It fired right up. Whew! It's a $1,740 rig I built a month ago and I sure as hell didn't want to tear it down and RMA the board. That tells me the XB7 died of heat/age instead of a lightning strike from the storm. Tech is scheduled for tomorrow after the CODA56 arrives so I won't bother installing it yet. See what the tech does.

UPDATE: Tech said the XB7 was taken out by lightning. Also said that my signals were too good that the 2 way splitter need to be replaced with a 4 way. He then installed a new XB7 and it was rather painless. Wish I could say the same for Amazon who dropped my CODA54 off on the neighbor's front porch. I mentioned that to the tech and he said if I activate the CODA54, then my account will be updated with user owned equipment and I'd have to return the XB7. Since my contract is 2 years free modem rental, I'll be sitting on the CODA54 for a bit. I'm loathe to buy a router with 2.5gb LAN because they're expensive and I have 3 GigE routers that I'm not even using because my main computer has 2.5Ggb LAN hooked straight into the XB7. The living room PC is GigE, the rest are wireless. No real need to have a separate router in the mix ...

Instead of using a 4-way splitter to reduce the signal, it would probably be better to just use a 6 dB attenuator like this one: »www.amazon.com/6db-Atten ··· 013L48XA

If it's just the downstream RF power levels that are too hot, this 6 dB "Forward Path Attenuator" will allow the upstream power levels to be mostly unaffected: »www.amazon.com/line-Sign ··· 882H96R/

NOTE: This "54 MHz" FPA is intended for "low-split" systems. For mid-split systems, an "85 MHz" FPA like this one would be needed: »www.multicominc.com/prod ··· enuator/

I have been buying the mid-split FPA for a few years now, It's actually what i'm using on my RCN setup (well two, 6dBm in series, as my signal is +20 coming in) and they've worked well keeping my signal in spec.

I originally got them to see if having hotter QAM below 85MHz would mess with it, but so far, so good.
