Can you be denied citizenship for bad credit?
U.S. immigration law sets out some automatic bars to a finding of
The USCIS does not consider an applicant's credit score or financial history when determining eligibility for citizenship. However, if your financial situation leads to issues that could demonstrate a lack of good moral character, such as fraud or deceit, this could potentially affect your application.
But having debt can cause problems with other aspects of your ability to stay in the United States. If you are applying for a green card, citizenship, or visa, you will need to have a credit score close to the national average. In 2020, Americans had an average score of 710.
When evaluating an applicant's “moral character” requirement, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) does not take into consideration whether a candidate for citizenship, a green card, or a visa has filed bankruptcy or has debt.
You have been convicted of or admitted to a crime involving moral turpitude (CIMT), such as fraud. You spent 180 days or more in jail or prison for any crime. You committed any crime related to illegal drugs other than a single offense involving 30 grams or less of marijuana.
Having debt does not render you ineligible for naturalization by itself, though it may affect if you meet the “good moral character” criteria. The exception is tax debt. If you failed to pay taxes, this generally results in rejection. You need to pay them or develop a repayment plan to avoid denial of your application.
USCIS will consider an applicant's credit report, credit score, debts and other liabilities as a factor in determining whether the individual is likely to become a public charge. A good credit report is considered a positive factor while a bad credit report is considered a negative factor.
Usually this is the five years before you applied, or three years if you're applying for citizenship on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen. You will also need to give a statement under oath about any criminal background you have in the period of good moral character.
The USCIS will carry out a biometrics service appointment, during which your fingerprints will be taken and sent for FBI fingerprint checks in the FBI's universal index. This check usually takes about 24 to 48 hours, revealing any criminal record you may have in the United States.
A. Not to worry. Having a bad credit rating or being in debt has no impact on your right to get an immigrant visa. It's true that immigrant visa applicants in both the family and employment categories must prove that they will not become a “public charge.” That is, someone who needs government assistance.
Can you be denied U.S. citizenship if you owe taxes?
However, missing a tax payment doesn't mean you are forever barred from U.S. citizenship. Nonpayment is a discretionary concern, which the officer will weigh into the decision of whether you have shown good moral character.
If the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) finds out an applicant owes back taxes to the U.S. government, it will likely deny the citizenship application. But tax issues are not an automatic bar to naturalization.
It's possible to be denied U.S. citizenship and go right back to being a permanent resident, with a green card.
Of the applications submitted each year, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves about 23%, denies about 2–3%, and leaves about 70% pending. This article covers the U.S. citizenship by naturalization process and statistics on that process.
You can request a hearing if your Form N-400 is denied after your eligibility interview, and if you believe you can overcome the grounds for denial. You should file your Form N-336 within 30 calendar days of receiving the decision denying your Form N-400 (or within 33 calendar days if we mailed the decision to you).
Will A Denial of Citizenship Cause Deportation? Usually, it doesn't. If the reasons for the denial of citizenship are failing the English Ability and Civic Tests or failing to prove the 5-year continuous stay in the US before application, then the applicant just goes back to permanent resident status.
Additionally, if you have financial problems, the IRS might deny your immigration application as well. It is important to note that bankruptcy is not a crime and should not disqualify someone from getting a green card or citizenship. People with bankruptcies are entitled to second chances in life.
Owing back taxes can impact your eligibility for U.S. citizenship, as it may raise concerns about compliance with tax laws and demonstrating good moral character. Tax compliance is also complicated.

Does USCIS check your tax returns?
USCIS will review your tax returns (for any relevant years) to confirm that they were filed jointly. After two years as a conditional resident, you'll need to file Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. Again, you must establish that you and your spouse have a bona fide marriage.
Having a low credit score or credit card debts should not directly impact your eligibility for a marriage-based green card. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) primarily focuses on factors related to your marriage and immigration eligibility when adjudicating marriage-based green card applications.
Typically, consolidating debt does not impact the immigration process.
Ordinarily, denial of U.S. citizenship leaves the person with permanent residence, but there's a risk of green card cancellation and deportation.
Can I apply for citizenship with overdue taxes? Generally, an applicant who fails to file tax returns or fails to pay taxes as required may not meet the good moral character requirement for naturalization. In short, this can be a reason for a denial. However, this doesn't mean that all cases are denied.
