good morning. i'm frances rivera. did you catch all the action? the host of the summer olympics, they're creeping up on team usa's dominance. after wednesday's events, the u.s. continues to lead the medal count with 30. but is facing renewed competition from france, who sits in second, with 26. both nations added to their gold medal total in the pool wednesday. the u.s.'s win coming from one of the most decorated olympians of all time. tom llamas has more. >> the greatest swimming machine we've ever seen. >> reporter: make it gold medal number eight for katie ledecky. setting an olympic record in her signature race, the 1500-meter freestyle. what more can america expect from you at these paris games? >> i'm going to give my best effort and represent team usa the best of my ability. >> reporter: and that wasn't the only olympic record broken in the pool.

news. the accused master mind behind the 9/11 attacks has reached a plea agreement with the u.s. military court. khalid shake mohamed, also known by ksm will plead guilty to lesser charges in an attempt to avoid the death penalty. good morning, what more do we know about this deal? >> reporter: good morning, frances. there are a number of things we still don't know about this deal such as the exact charges the men are expected to plead guilty to. they will avoid the death penalty while allowing the nearly two-decade case to come to a close. khalid sheikh mohamed, he was captured by u.s. forces in pakistan in 2023 and 03 and has held since 2006. ksm and his two accomplices were originally charged by a military

court in 2008. the initial charges were no less than war crimes and murder. and for the past 15 years, there has not been much movement on their case, with these three defendants stuck in pretrial detention. lawyers representing them have slammed this as a farce going as far as to say the government was slow-walking the trial in avoiding details to come to light about cia captivity. the concerns particularly seem to relate to regards to their treatment in this period. the next steps in this process now that the plea agreement has been reached with the office of military commissions is expected to come at a hearing next week when the three defendants are expected to plead guilty to unspecified, lesser charges. >> i'm sure there's strong sentiment from the victims and their families. iran is vowing revenge after hamas' political leader was

cinci cinc assassinated. the "new york times" cites three sources, including two in the revolutionary guard corps. several major airlines have canceled flights to the region. and the state department is asking americans to avoid travel to lebanon, where israel assassinated a hezbollah commander on tuesday. police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 43-year-old man outside a philadelphia mosque. police are calling it an execution-style killing, adding that he was shot several times. investigators have not made any arrests and are still trying to figure out a motive. turning to the western u.s. where nearly 100 wildfires continue to rage. in colorado, one person has died after flames from the stone canyon fire tore through homes north west of denver.

farther south, the quarry fire forcing nearly 600 homes to be evacuated, and a small fire scorching just over 300 acres is challenging resources already stretched thin. colorado's governor calling up the national guard to help fire crews as residents across the state grow more concerned. >> if the wind switches direction, i think we could be in big trouble. >> i don't want to lose my home. i don't want to lose my neighbors. >> in cathollifornia, the crews getting a handle on the park fire. but as evacuees return home, some are finding nothing left behind. let's turn to angie lassman who is tracking multiple systems across the country. >> we've got rain to talk about across parts of the midwest and the plains. and warm temperatures, too. we'll get to air quality thanks to the fires here in just a moment. but we have a line of thunderstorms working across parts of the midwest. this is going to impact folks

ashley benefield was stoic as a jury delivered its verdict, finding the 33-year-old guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband. his family speaking out. >> no one wins in this case, except that justice was served. >> he loved his wife. he loved his girls, and he wanted to be here for them. >> reporter: benfield gained notoriety after killing her husband, doug benefield in 2020. >> he started coming at me. >> reporter: she alleged he was abusive. even hitting their dog so hard the pet was knocked unconscious. benefield said after he struck her in the face she shot him in self-defense. >> i pulled the trigger, and he kept coming. >> reporter: the defendant's step daughter said this after the verdict was announced. >> i apologize to all the women who have gone through domestic violence situations. i think that what ashley was doing was unfair to them.

they deserve justice, and i'm very happy that my dad got the justice that he deserves. >> we love her like god loves her, but you have to pay for your crime, and she's finally going to do that. >> reporter: prosecutors argue the evidence did not match the defendant's story, portraying ashley benefield as a mother intent on getting sole custody of the couple's young daughter. >> this was a battle she was going to win at all costs. >> reporter: the jury found her guilty of the lesser crime. does that indicate maybe they thought there was some element of self-defense here? >> especially in florida, the difference between a successful self-defense claim or involuntary manslaughter is a gray area. and this verdict may represent the notion that the jury may have been close to deciding self-defense but really didn't get there and concluded that this may not have been an intentional killing, but it was,
